South Africa, a republic with nine provinces, is located at the southernmost point of the continent of Africa. With 11 official languages and just over 45 million people, this country is as diverse in terrain as it is in people groups. It is the wealthiest and most industrialized country in Africa but it remains deeply scarred by apartheid divisions.
South Africa has mistakenly been termed a "Christian Nation" as the post-apartheid government has made a strong push to give all religions equality. This has given high priority to ethnic African religions, Islam, Hinduism, humanism and the interfaith movement at the expense of Christianity. Muslims exercise a far greater influence than their numbers might indicate. Holding 50% of the high- office positions in government, they are strong advocates for spreading their faith. South Africa also holds the largest population of East Indians outside of India, perpetuating the beliefs of Hinduism and Buddhism.
Great waves of social, political and economic upheaval have changed the moral landscape of South Africa, giving rise to crime and AIDS. Every 17 seconds a serious crime is committed in South Africa. AIDS is the number one cause of death in Africa and according to the World Health Organization; South Africa has the fastest accelerating rate of HIV in the world. 4.7 million people are infected and approximately 1014 South Africans die each day due to this widespread epidemic.
The African people are some of the most warm, generous and gracious people on the face of this earth. With social, political, religious and economic instability, this nation cries out for a campaign of moral regeneration. South Africa plays a key role in the mobilization of the Gospel throughout the rest of the continent. If Christ's touch of healing is brought to the shattered hearts of those in South Africa they will infiltrate the nations of Africa with this message of love and hope.
